The Sidney prize is an award given monthly for journalism that exposes social and economic injustice. The winner is announced on the second Wednesday of each month. The Sidney prize is funded by the Hillman Foundation, which is a left-leaning organization that awards monetary prizes to journalists and public figures who pursue social justice and change for the common good. The Hillman Foundation is a member-supported nonprofit organization. It is led by former president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union and current chairman emeritus of Workers United, SEIU.

The Yong Kim Scholarship was established in memory of the late Professor and Mrs. Joe H. Kim and their family to honor Yong’s love of East Asia, his dynamism, and his unwavering loyalty to the highest ideals. The Scholarship supports a Harvard Law student writing an outstanding paper on law and society or law and economic change in a Muslim world context. The scholarship is intended to promote excellence and encourage scholarship in the broad field of Asian legal studies.

This prize is awarded by the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) to the author of an outstanding scholarly book in the history of technology published in the previous three years. The book should represent the finest work in the field and make an original contribution to the study of technology. The 2024 winner is Dr. Emily Michelson (University of St. Andrews), Catholic Spectacle and Rome’s Jews: Early Modern Conversion and Resistance (Princeton University Press, 2022).

Dr Clare Jackson is the 2025 winner of the NSW History Prize for her acclaimed book, Royalist Ideas in Late Seventeenth Century Scotland. She studied history as an undergraduate at Sidney and returned to the department for her PhD on seventeenth-century Scottish politics and culture, which was completed in 2000 and resulted in two benchmark books in art history: The Nature of Art and Images of Man.

In addition to the NSW History Prize, there are a number of other prestigious history prizes available to students at all levels. These include the ANZAC Memorial Trustees Military History Prize, the Sydney UNESCO City of Film Rising Talent Award, and the NSW Premier’s Literary and Historical Awards.

In addition, the Sydney Film Festival offers a range of prestigious short film prizes. These include the Event Cinemas Rising Talent Prize which recognises an emerging filmmaker whose works demonstrate innovation, imagination and high impact, and the Sydney UNESCO City of Film Prize, which is open to all NSW-based short films, including feature-length and experimental projects.
