Tech Data Distribution (Hong Kong) has entered a strategic distributorship agreement with Allied Telesis, an IT infrastructure solutions vendor that uses AI-based software to help solve technological problems. The agreement will enable Tech Data HK to help its partners leverage the power of AI for digital transformation and drive business outcomes.

The Hong Kong government has proposed a series of legislative amendments that would give the city’s privacy watchdog new powers to investigate doxxing – the malicious publishing of private or identifying data. Under the new rules, authorities may demand information from internet service providers and other companies to assist investigations into doxxing, which has exploded in popularity in Hong Kong in recent years. The proposed amendments will also make doxxing a criminal offence, and will empower authorities to search or arrest people if they do not comply with requests for information.

Currently, Hong Kong is governed by the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), which came into effect in 1996 and was amended in 2012 and 2021. The PDPA establishes data subject rights, and regulates the collection, processing, holding and use of personal data through six data protection principles.

In June, Google paused direct responses to most user data requests in Hong Kong after the enactment of the new national security law. However, it complied with three requests from Hong Kong authorities for user data in the second half of last year, including one emergency disclosure request involving a threat to life, according to Google’s global policy on government requests for user information.

Google’s global policy says it can only disclose data in accordance with the laws of the requesting country, and that it may notify the account holder unless legally prohibited. It did not provide details on which requests it complied with, or whether the three requests referred to accounts in Hong Kong.

Aside from the legal requirements of a data protection regime, there are a number of practical issues related to implementing a data mesh. A data mesh architecture is not a single product, and requires a comprehensive, iterative approach to building a network of interconnected data lakes and ponds, operational systems of record, and self-service analytics tools.
