Hong Kong Prize 2023 Winners Announced

The Hong Kong Art Prize has announced the winners for this year. Nine artists from Hong Kong made it to the shortlist, the highest number in the history of the prize. Moreover, nearly two-thirds of the shortlist were women, also a record for the prize. The award was established to encourage and reward talented individuals in the field of Hong Kong art. It is a major annual event in Hong Kong that has attracted high profile art collectors over the years.

The award is sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and was founded in 2022 to promote science and technology innovation. Laureates (individuals or groups) are chosen for their remarkable achievements in scientific research as well as the influence of their research on the transformation of R&D outcomes in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Hong Kong Prize 2023

The winner of the HK prize was Professor Jia Jiaya from The Chinese University of Hong Kong for her work on disruptive in-sensor computing paradigms for artificial vision sensors, which enable information processing directly within the sensors. This greatly improves the efficiency of artificial vision systems. The other winners were Dr. Wong Siu Lun Alan from the University of Hong Kong for his development of an electro-optic modulator that allows the conversion of electrical signals into optical signals, thereby increasing the data transmission speed; and Prof. Cheung Chi Fai Benny and Prof. LUO Xiapu Daniel from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for their research into the fabrication of a scalable and modular 3D electronic circuit.

In addition, the prize is intended to inspire students to learn about Hong Kong’s history and culture. In the past, the prize has organised inter-school competitions of study projects on Hong Kong history and culture. These competitions have enhanced students’ understanding of Hong Kong history and encouraged them to study actively outside class through thorough investigation and research into the relationship between historical developments and changes in society.

Moreover, the prize provides an opportunity to showcase the best of Hong Kong’s cultural and technological talents to the world and beyond. In recent years, the prize has received overwhelming support from all sectors of the community and continues to enhance the innovative atmosphere in Hong Kong. In order to make the HK prize even more prestigious and receptive to a wider range of talents, the prize committee will look into ways to expand the scope of the competition in the future. In order to achieve this, the committee will consult the relevant experts to further discuss the criteria of the HK prize. In the meantime, the prize committee would like to thank all the supporters for their continued support and look forward to your continuing help in the future. The full terms and conditions of the HK prize can be found at the official website. The prizes are non-refundable. Any disputes about the award will be settled by the board.
