Domino is a game of skill and luck played with a set of small rectangular blocks. Each domino has a number on one side and is blank or marked with an arrangement of dots resembling those on dice on the other. The most common domino sets have 28 tiles. Each tile belongs to one of four suits, and the suit of a particular number determines how many points are scored in the game.
The first player to score ten points wins the game. Players can play against each other or in teams. A variation of the game in which players compete for a total of five or three points is commonly played at parties or in British public houses and clubs. The objective is to attach a domino from the hand to an end of a line of already-played tiles so that the sum of all three or five tiles at the end of the row can be divided by five or three, scoring one point each time. The game is a favorite among children and adults alike.
When Lily Hevesh was 9, she started collecting dominoes and playing the game with her family. She soon got so good at it that she began creating mind-blowing domino setups, posting videos of them on her YouTube channel. Today, at 20, Hevesh is a professional domino artist who works on large projects for movies and TV shows. She’s even helped to set a Guinness World Record for the largest domino display: a circular arrangement of 76,017 dominoes.
Hevesh follows a version of the engineering-design process when she creates her creations. She starts by thinking about what she wants the installation to communicate and brainstorming images that might illustrate that message. She then begins laying out the pieces and making sure they are in the right place. Next, she checks that the whole thing will fall properly by conducting a trial run.
The final step in Hevesh’s design process is executing the actual domino display. Depending on the complexity of the piece, this can involve anything from a simple line to an elaborate grid that forms pictures or words or 3D structures like towers and pyramids.
In a business like pizza delivery, innovation is key. That’s why Domino’s is constantly experimenting with new delivery technologies. The company is focusing on creating a purpose-built Domino’s vehicle for pizza deliveries and also working to make food delivery using drones a reality. It’s a sign of a smart company that listens to its customers and is willing to change with the times. Domino’s CEO, Domenic Doyle, is a great example of this. He’s kept the company on track after the turmoil that followed the departure of his predecessor, David Brandon, by staying true to Domino’s core values. In particular, Doyle focuses on “Championing Our Customers,” by listening to feedback and implementing changes that improve the customer experience.
